One Good Film: "Safety Not Guaranteed" (2012)

Calling all Aubrey Plaza fans: The actress's first starring role is a delightful cheap rental on VOD. Plus: A review of "The Critic" with Ian McKellen.

One Good Film: "Safety Not Guaranteed" (2012)

A regular feature for paid Watch List subscribers: I suggest one reasonably under-the-radar movie from the recent or distant past, and you do what you want with that information.

A new Aubrey Plaza time-travel movie, "My Old Ass," is opening in New York and L.A. today before rolling out to other cities; it's pretty good, and I wrote about it from Sundance in January and will be reviewing it for the Washington Post next week. But its appearance gives me an excuse to plug the other Aubrey Plaza time-travel movie, the delightful "Safety Not Guaranteed" (⭐ ⭐ ⭐, for $3.99 rental on Amazon and Apple TV) from 2012. That was the period the actress was coming into her own after a run of character parts in other people's movies and three years on "Parks and Recreation" as the show's Eeyore, April Ludgate.
